We’ll take the 7:00 AM train to Santa Clara and meet Dick Sippel, who will sag our bags to and from the motel. After a stop in Saratoga, we’ll begin a moderate/easy climb up Saratoga Gap, and through the scenic Big Basin State Park. Then you can choose a short but rather steep climb up the infamous Jamison Creek then a delightful descent on Empire Grade with a spacious shoulder and almost no traffic, or continue down Hwy 9 (easier but traffic). The second day options include going south to lunch in Moss Landing, or going north to lunch in Davenport, or meander the hills, or you can hang out along the beach. Thursday we’ll ride back over Mt. Charlie, have lunch in Los Gatos, then take the bike trail almost all the way to San Jose Amtrak. We’ll stay both nights at the Santa Cruz Beach Inn, 600 Riverside Ave., Santa Cruz 95060. The rates are $59.50 for one person in a room, $79.50 for 2 people w 2 Q-beds. This is the first of the Spring Bicycle centuries.  Come join us for the first ride of Spring. Rides are responsible for their own registration.    

The 100 mile ride is a loop course to Lompoc, Vandenberg, Santa Maria and back through Los Olivos to Solvang with 4950 feet of elevation gain.

The 50 mile route is out and back in a loop fashion to Lompoc, the first 23 miles being the same route as the Century. The total elevation gain is 1850 feet with no one hill on either course being more than 800 feet high.
